The General Investigations Unit investigates crimes from minor mailbox vandalisms to homicides and everything in between. Detectives have received extensive training in the investigation of various crimes, including narcotics, property crimes, crimes against persons and sexual offenses. Some detectives also are members of the Kansas City Metro Squad, which assists other agencies with homicide investigations. The Sheriff’s Office and Investigations Division are also active members of the Clay County Investigative Squad and Northland Officer-Involved Shooting Team.
The General Investigations Unit of the Clay County Sheriff’s Office has grown immensely in recent years. It is part of the Investigations Division and is comprised of one sergeant, six general detectives, one cybercrimes task force detective, one forensic computer task force detective, one reserve detective who works with the Division of Homeland Security, a civilian crime analyst and civilian evidence technician. Both of the civilian personnel also assist with the processing of criminal records.
