Detectives are investigating an apparent death by suicide of an inmate in the Clay County Detention Center just after midnight today, Jan. 23.
The victim is 42-year-old Ryan Everson, a white male from Independence, Mo. He was booked into the Detention Center on Jan. 12 to await trial on charges of non-support of a child.
Detention Center staff discovered Everson unresponsive in his cell during their hourly checks shortly after midnight Monday. Detention officers and deputies, as well as the jail’s contracted medical care providers, performed CPR and attempted to use an AED (automated external defibrillator) to revive Everson before emergency medical personnel arrived, but he could not be resuscitated. Everson had no cell mate and was alone in his cell when he was discovered unresponsive.
The Clay County Sheriff’s Office’s Investigations Unit is reviewing the incident.
The Clay County Sheriff’s Office makes every effort to ensure the safety and wellness of inmates, to include providing 40 hours of in-house mental health care weekly.
