Shortly before 10 p.m. Dec. 31, deputies working a traffic grant stopped a woman who was speeding. She said she was trying to get to her child who was at Winnwood Skate Center, where shots had been fired. Neither we nor the Kansas City Missouri Police Department had received any calls reporting a shooting there at that time.

Deputies followed her to Winnwood Skate Center, 4426 NE Winn Rd., Kansas City, Mo. While en route, a report of shots fired came in. (We were unable to confirm whether any shots actually were fired.) When deputies arrived, they encountered a large disturbance involving youth spilling out of the Skate Center into the adjacent Target parking lot. KCPD officers began arriving to assist with crowd control. Deputies were unable to locate anyone who had been hurt.

Deputies saw teens engaged in a fight in the Target parking lot. They saw one teen reach for his waistband during the fight and Tased him. They took that teen, a 14-year-old, into custody and recovered a loaded handgun from his waistband. They later learned he is accused of using the weapon to rob another teen of his shoes earlier in the evening. After EMS evaluated the suspect (standard procedure after a Taser is used), Clay County Juvenile authorities declined to take the 14-year-old into custody, and he was released to a parent.

No one was hurt. The area has been cleared with the assistance of KCPD and the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
