The Clay County Sheriff’s Office broke ground today on its first major construction project in 25 years.
Sheriff Will Akin, deputies, Clay County Commissioners, Piper-Wind Architects and Straub Construction celebrated the start of construction on the Law Enforcement Resource Center, located in unincorporated Clay County at 16414 N.E. 116th St.
The Center will feature an indoor shooting range, a classroom for up to 60 people, and spaces for training in defensive tactics and decision-making. It also will incorporate virtual and augmented reality training. The Law Enforcement Resource Center will allow Sheriff’s Office personnel to meet the training requirements needed to better serve the growing Clay County community.
The approximately $8 million project is funded by federal grants, including money from the American Rescue Plan Act and the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant. The architect for the project is Piper-Wind Architects, Inc., and the general contractor is Straub Construction.
The last major construction project for the Sheriff’s Office was the Clay County Detention Center expansion, which opened in 2000.
The Law Enforcement Resource Center is expected to open in December 2025 or January 2026.
